DOGE Uncovers Military Waste amid Increased Attention over Social Security Audits

March 5, 2025

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, continues to slash away at wasteful spending within the many layers of the federal government. On Monday, the Pentagon announced some of the ways that taxpayer dollars were spent on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and other controversial agendas. And it’s no small amount of couch change but roughly $80 million dollars’ worth.

Unveiled through DOGE’s efforts, Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell detailed some of the findings: $1.9 million was going toward “holistic DEI transformation and training in the Air Force.” Six million dollars went to the University of Montana to “strengthen American democracy by bridging divides.” Another $3.5 million was being used to fund “support to DEI groups” through the Defense Human Resources Activity, and $1.6 million was funneled to the University of Florida to study “social and institutional detriments of vulnerability and resilience to climate hazards in the African Sahel.”

“This is not what we do,” Parnell stated. “[T]his stuff is not a core function of our military [but] a distraction from our core mission.” He went on to explain that these discoveries “are just the start,” and that more announcements were to come. For now, Parnell emphasized that these “initial findings” alone will likely spare roughly $80 million in wasted spending. “[W]e are working hand in glove with DOGE,” he added. “So, stay tuned in the weeks ahead, as we trim the fat, preserve muscle, make the DoD more mission-capable and more lethal.”

However, it’s not just the Department of Defense trimming its waste. A few weeks ago, DOGE looked at the Department of the Treasury’s books and found roughly “$4.7 trillion in government expenditures that are essentially untraceable due to missing account identification codes.” In addition, despite records that had millions of people between the ages of 140 and 369 marked as alive in the Social Security database, Democrats still criticized Musk and his team for demanding audits on the questionable discoveries. Those audits, The Washington Stand reported, revealed “that around 531 million unique Social Security numbers are in circulation — and that ‘thousands’ may be in use to commit identity fraud.”

Meanwhile, The Post Millennial reported that Democratic leaders, in a Tuesday press conference, accused Musk and President Donald Trump of targeting Social Security payments, claiming that “the Trump administration is moving to cut the Social Security Administration (SSA) from 57,000 workers to 50,000.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) insisted, “We need every person who’s a recipient, or would be recipient, who would like to get this benefit, to call their congressmen, their Republican congressmen and senators, and give one simple sentence, ‘Hands off my Social Security.’”

Other Democrats, such as Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.), claimed that “Trump and Elon are now pushing all SSA employees out the door” and “taking a wrecking ball to the Social Security Administration … putting your Social Security benefits at risk.” In reality, these proposed cuts only make up roughly 12% of this workforce. Yet, as Democrats panic, surveys suggests a large sum of Americans are on board with DOGE’s mission — especially when it comes to sorting out the Social Security discrepancies.

Rasmussen Reports found that “most voters favor [DOGE] doing an audit of the Social Security system, and think such an audit would find rampant fraud in the program.” Researchers found “59% of Likely U.S. Voters would support having DOGE audit Social Security, including 41% who Strongly Support it.” The support also crosses racial lines; Rasmussen found that 64% of black voters and 67% of Hispanic voters also agree with the audit.

When asked, “How likely is it that an audit of Social Security would reveal widespread fraud in the program?” a total of 61% said “very” or “somewhat” likely. Of those who believed fraud would likely be discovered, 72% were between the ages of 19 to 39, and 53% were over 65. Notably, the poll also asked, “Which political party do you trust more to handle Social Security?” And in what some experts believe is a first, Republicans earned a plurality of voters’ trust at 44%.

Breitbart’s John Nolte wrote: “Despite the best efforts of Democrats to astroturf Republican town halls with fake protesters while conspiring with the regime media to report on them as though President Trump is facing a backlash, the Real World not only supports DOGE but wants DOGE to dig into the Social Security Administration.” As he went on to note, “a 24/7 assault was launched” by Democrats and the media “to terrify Republican lawmakers into believing the American people do not want their government audited.”

But “think about this,” he continued, “not only do voters trust the GOP more than Democrats to protect Social Security, but they also trust Trump, Musk, and DOGE to do a full audit. Moreover, they want a full audit.” As he went on to emphasize, “We’re living in a whole new world, one where the fake media no longer matter, and I never thought I would live to see it.”
