Trump Admin. Battle with Harvard Continues over Student Visas, Anti-Semitism

July 10, 2025

The Trump administration is duking it out with Harvard University once again, with the Department of Education threatening the college’s accreditation and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announcing its subpoena for “relevant information” on Harvard’s international students.

The U.S. Departments of Education and Health and Human Services (HHS) put out a statement on July 9, announcing that they “notified the New England Commission of Higher Education that its member institution, Harvard University, is in violation of federal antidiscrimination laws and therefore may fail to meet the standards for accreditation set by the Commission.”

This comes after the HHS’s June 30 finding that Harvard “violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” after the horrific events on October 7, 2023, which led to pro-Palestine agitators threatening and endangering Harvard’s Jewish students and staff.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon expressed her disappointment with the institution in a HHS statement: “By allowing antisemitic harassment and discrimination to persist unchecked on its campus, Harvard University has failed in its obligation to students, educators, and American taxpayers.”

President Trump has been going after many of America’s Ivy League universities over controversial “woke” ideology since the beginning of his administration. “Harvard is an Anti-Semitic, Far Left Institution, as are numerous others, with students being accepted from all over the World that want to rip our Country apart. The place is a Liberal mess, allowing a certain group of crazed lunatics to enter and exit the classroom and spew fake ANGER AND HATE,” President Trump said on Truth Social in April.

If Havard loses their accreditation eligibility, they will no longer receive federal financial funds, which will significantly impact student attraction and enrollment. Even the largest institutions heavily rely on Pell grants and federal student loans that are currently in jeopardy.

Nonethless, this issue now rests in the hands of the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). According to the NECHE website, if found to be “out of compliance,” Harvard will have “up to four years to come into compliance,” and would remain accredited during that time.

But the Trump administration is continuing its pursuit, announcing Wednesday that the DHS will subpoena Harvard University for “relevant information” regarding their international students. “This comes after the university repeatedly refused past non-coercive requests to hand over the required information for its Student Visitor and Exchange Program certification,” the DHS explained in a press release.

“Harvard, like other universities, has allowed foreign students to abuse their visa privileges and advocate for violence and terrorism on campus. If Harvard won’t defend the interests of its students, then we will,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.

The next hearing for this case is set for July 21.
