Genesis Mission: America’s Next Great National Mobilization

On July 20, 1969, I was a West Point plebe sitting with my classmates in the academy’s South Auditorium, watching men land on the moon for the first time.

The projected image was grainy. It had traveled nearly a quarter-million miles. Yet none of that diminished the wonder. We were watching history as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface while Michael Collins orbited above them.

Three astronauts made the journey, but America made the mission possible.

At its height, Apollo engaged approximately 400,000 people and drew support from more than 20,000 industrial firms and universities. Scientists, engineers, military personnel, factory workers, and mathematicians joined an undertaking many had considered impossible.

America had mounted an equally consequential national effort during World War II. The Manhattan Project combined renowned scientists, industry, the military, and 130,000 workers. It translated scientific discoveries into an unprecedented national capability and became a model for the large-scale American research enterprise that followed.

The Trump administration’s Genesis Mission should be understood in that tradition.

President Donald Trump launched Genesis by executive order in November 2025, calling for a coordinated national effort comparable in urgency and ambition to the Manhattan Project. The mission is intended to combine federal scientific data, national laboratories, universities, American businesses, advanced computing, and artificial intelligence to attack problems that no institution can solve alone.

That effort moved from concept toward execution at the July 22 Genesis Mission Summit in Washington. The White House announced more than $5 billion in federal commitments and participation by more than 15 agencies. The Department of Energy selected 278 initial projects after the largest response to a funding opportunity in its history; the portfolio includes 342 participating institutions across all 50 states.

That is what a national mobilization begins to look like.

Genesis is not another Washington conference about chatbots. Its purpose is to make artificial intelligence a working instrument of science. At the center is the American Science and Security Platform, intended to connect high-performance computers, experimental facilities, government data, and production capabilities into one coordinated discovery system.

In practical terms, AI can help scientists search enormous datasets, identify patterns, propose experiments, run simulations, and move more quickly to the next test. The stated goal is to double American scientific productivity. That claim must be proven, but the projects show why the effort deserves attention.

Federal teams plan to use Energy Department supercomputers to study hundreds of rare pediatric cancer subtypes, combine veterans’ health records and genomic data to detect disease risks earlier, and search for new uses for existing drugs. Other projects would improve electric grid planning, create digital models of bridges and transportation systems, accelerate semiconductor research, and analyze more than 150 petabytes of NASA data.

The national-security applications are just as serious. The Department of War and National Nuclear Security Administration intend to use AI-supported modeling to speed the design, testing, and certification of weapons components. Other work will focus on biological-threat detection, materials for the nuclear deterrent, and faster attribution of nuclear materials or detonation debris.

Scientific power is national power. The country that leads in advanced computing, energy, biotechnology, materials, semiconductors, and quantum systems will gain economic and military advantages. America cannot assume that yesterday’s achievements guarantee tomorrow’s leadership.

That competition played out in Washington on the summit floor, whose structure was encouraging. Federal leaders, national laboratories, universities, companies, startups, and researchers were brought together around specific projects and shared infrastructure. The program included technical demonstrations, a platform presentation, a research poster session, working groups, and a bipartisan congressional panel. The point was not simply to celebrate technology. It was to build the relationships and machinery needed to produce results.

Japan’s participation adds another important dimension. Japan is the first international partner in Genesis, under a $1 billion partnership linking 11 joint teams, 12 Energy Department national laboratories, and 12 Japanese research institutions. The work will include quantum science, fusion, biotechnology, advanced materials, particle physics, and autonomous laboratories.

That is the right model. America should cooperate with technologically capable allies that protect intellectual property and share our strategic interests. Scientific openness remains valuable, but it cannot become strategic carelessness. Sensitive data, laboratories, and national security research must be guarded from espionage and misuse.

The comparisons with Apollo and the Manhattan Project also carry a warning. Apollo had a clear finish line. The Manhattan Project had a specific wartime objective. Genesis encompasses hundreds of projects across numerous agencies. Its greatest risk may be diffusion of effort.

Leaders must set measurable milestones. Failed projects must be corrected or ended. Agencies must share appropriate information rather than protect bureaucratic territory. Commercial partnerships must serve the mission rather than become permanent subsidy arrangements. Congress must provide sustained support and firm oversight.

Genesis will also require an investment in people. After the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, Congress passed the National Defense Education Act of 1958, strengthening education in science, mathematics, and other fields tied to national security. Today’s challenge demands scientists and engineers, but also technicians, machinists, programmers, and skilled manufacturing workers.

There is a moral requirement as well.

Christians need not fear scientific discovery. Scripture assigns mankind responsibility for the created world. But stewardship is not license. Technology can increase our power without increasing our wisdom. AI may help discover a medicine, identify a threat, or design a weapon. It cannot decide whether every possible use is right.

Those judgments belong to human beings accountable to God and one another. Genesis should protect human dignity, preserve human agency, and keep scientific power under moral restraint.

More than half a century ago, I sat in that West Point auditorium and watched Americans walk on the moon. The image was imperfect, but the achievement was unmistakable.

Genesis may never produce one moment as dramatic as the first footprint on the lunar surface. Its victories may emerge quietly from hospitals, laboratories, electric grids, defense facilities, and factory floors.

But if America brings its best minds and institutions together, works with trusted allies, and couples scientific ambition with moral clarity, the Genesis Mission could become one of the defining national undertakings of our time.

We have accomplished the seemingly impossible before. The question is whether we still possess the shared purpose to do it again.
