When AI Moves into the House, Who’s in Charge?

A few days before Jesse Genet’s family left for Lake Tahoe, a children’s book about boats appeared on her porch. It was the right subject, the right reading level, and it arrived at just the right time.

Genet, an entrepreneur and mother in a blended family with seven children, had not ordered it. “Claire” had.

Claire is one of Genet’s artificial intelligence agents: software that can carry out tasks on a person’s behalf rather than simply answer questions. According to a profile in The Cut, Claire had seen the Tahoe trip on the family calendar, concluded that the children might enjoy a related book, selected one, and bought it from Amazon. The AI agent also monitors the family’s food supply and handles grocery shopping. Genet sometimes awakens to find groceries on the porch that she never personally ordered. She says her agents gave her “five years back.”

What busy parent would not be tempted by that?

Most of us met this technology through narrow digital assistants such as earlier versions of Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri. We ask a question, dictate a reminder, or tell the device to add milk to a shopping list. The machine waits.

A true AI agent is different. Tell tomorrow’s Claire, “Keep the house stocked with what we normally need, stay within our budget, and tell me only when something unusual happens,” and the machine must determine what is needed, when to buy it, what price is acceptable, and when to ask permission.

Alexa answered. Claire acts. The difference is enormous.

And Claire may not look like C-3PO, the humanoid protocol droid from “Star Wars.” In Genet’s house, her agents run on a rack of Apple Mac minis and a Mac Studio. She has also begun running AI models on those machines rather than relying entirely on outside services, so family information can remain in the house.

The broader market is moving in the same direction. Amazon’s next-generation Alexa+, which uses generative AI, works across voice devices, phones, and the web. Amazon says Alexa+ can retain context from past interactions, update a family calendar, control smart-home equipment, order groceries, make reservations, and even navigate the web to arrange a home repair.

Tomorrow’s Claire may therefore be everywhere without being anywhere in particular: in the kitchen speaker, phone, car, television, and computer.

To serve us well, however, Claire must know us well. Calendar access improves scheduling. Purchase history improves shopping. Location improves travel planning. Smart-home access can improve energy use and security; financial access, budgeting.

Every new permission buys another measure of convenience. The less Claire knows, the less useful the agent is. The more it knows, the more consequential our trust becomes.

Americans appear to understand that instinctively. Gartner, a research and advisory firm, reported in May that only 11% of U.S. consumers were willing to let AI make purchase decisions even in relatively low-stakes categories. Consumers were considerably more willing to let AI narrow the choices while reserving the final decision for themselves.

Forrester, a technology and consumer-behavior research firm, found an even sharper line. Three-quarters of surveyed adults in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada said they were uncomfortable letting an AI agent complete and pay for purchases on its own, even with spending limits and rules set in advance.

That skepticism is healthy. But history suggests it may not last.

When the automatic teller machine (ATM) emerged, bankers wondered whether customers would trust hardware with their money. In a Smithsonian Institution oral history, ATM pioneer Don Wetzel recalled that banks feared losing the personal touch with customers, and that younger people adopted the machines faster than older ones. Convenience eventually prevailed. Today few of us think twice about using an ATM.

The pressure is already building around AI agents. Thales, a global technology and cybersecurity company, reported in its 2026 Bad Bot Report that automated systems generated 53% of internet traffic in 2025, compared with 47% attributed to humans. Not all those “bots,” or automated software programs, are personal AI agents; many are search-engine crawlers, information scrapers, security tools, or malicious programs. Still, the threshold matters. Businesses now serve machines as well as people.

Eventually, some household agents may acquire bodies. 1X, an AI and robotics company developing general-purpose household robots, is taking orders for NEO, a human-shaped home robot designed to perform chores, with U.S. deliveries scheduled to begin in 2026. The company acknowledges the technology’s present limits: complex tasks NEO does not know may still require scheduled remote supervision by a human expert.

The software will probably enter the house before the robotic servant does.

There is a larger historical parallel. Electricity did not merely replace candles. It became infrastructure for refrigerators, washing machines, and eventually computers. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History describes rural electrification as a “peaceful revolution” that reduced exhausting physical labor and opened new uses for time, although new technology did not simply eliminate housework.

AI could become a similar kind of cognitive infrastructure, technology woven into the thinking, remembering, planning, and decision-making behind ordinary life. Someday, saying, “I used AI today,” may sound as odd as saying, “I used electricity today.”

That raises a question Silicon Valley rarely asks: If Claire really can give us years back, what will we do with them?

Will we spend more time with our children? More time caring for aging parents, serving our church and neighbors, reading, creating, praying, learning? Or will machines relieve us of tedious work only so that other machines can fill the reclaimed hours with more entertainment and consumption?

The Apostle Paul instructed Christians to walk wisely, “making the best use of the time” (Ephesians 5:15-16, ESV). That command will not become obsolete because an agent manages the calendar.

Neither will personal responsibility. We can delegate the purchase of detergent, allow software to compare prices, and ask it to recommend the best choice. But the more consequential the decision, the closer it should remain to accountable human judgment.

Romans 14:12 reminds us that “each of us will give an account of himself to God.” Claire will not stand there for us.

If I give a machine authority to act for me, “my AI did it” cannot excuse my failure to set wise limits on that authority. Chores can be delegated. Judgment can be assisted. Responsibility cannot be surrendered.

Claire entered Jesse Genet’s home because it was useful. That is probably how household AI will enter ours: one helpful task, one successful decision, one additional permission at a time.

Claire may someday help run the house. It must never become the reason we stop running our own lives.
