A New York mother has been arrested after giving birth to a baby boy and leaving him in the bathroom of a supermarket over the weekend. A law was just passed in Massachusetts last month that allows babies to be aborted and discarded up until the moment they are born. Presumably, the only difference between this baby born in New York and a baby killed at nine months gestation in Massachusetts is that one is inside the womb and the other has just entered the world outside of it. 

The 32-year-old ShopRite worker in White Plains, New York, is now in custody and receiving care for the manner in which she birthed her child. The child was not discovered until the next morning when another employee saw him and dialed 911. The baby is still alive and is in stable condition after being taken in for care at White Plains Hospital, ABC 7 reported. 

“The child is being taken care of by Child Protective Services, and we are talking to the DA about charges,” disclosed White Plains Police Sergeant Claudio Benavides.

For decades, society has normalized abortion. In the days immediately following conception, before a baby’s heartbeat is detected, during the first trimester, and even at nine months gestation — all are points in a baby’s life in which elected officials have deemed it permissible for a woman to kill her child. Sometimes, when a woman aborts the life growing inside her, she is congratulated and even praised. 

Earlier this year, when a fan posted that she had an abortion after attending singer Zara Larsson’s concert, Larsson replied in a comment, “I killed the performance and then you killed it after the performance purrrrr,” complimenting the woman. 

In 1997, the world watched in horror as the story of Melissa Drexler, the infamous teen who birthed, smothered, and discarded her baby in the bathroom during her high school prom unfolded. “New Jersey Charges Woman, 18, With Killing Baby Born at Prom,” read the 1997 New York Times headline. Killing. A word the Left would not have used had it been an abortion that occurred only moments earlier inside the womb. Drexler was convicted of murder. 

The same people who cry that disposing a newborn in a bathroom trashcan is “killing” see a D&E procedure to “alleviate” a woman from her pregnancy at nine months as a merciful act. Where is the same compassion and righteous anger for the unborn?

“The crux of the life issue is that so many people in our culture are willing to ignore the reality of what pregnancy is, which is that you know a child doesn’t magically come to life when they proceed through the birth canal and are born,” Joy Stockbauer, policy analyst for the Center for Human Dignity at Family Research Council, told The Washington Stand. “For months prior to that, they have a heartbeat. They’re kicking their mother. They have a unique genetic makeup and DNA that won’t ever be repeated again. That’s a unique human being.”

In a statement about the case of the New York baby, the White Plains Department of Public Safety said, “The circumstances surrounding this event are heart-wrenching, and our thoughts remain with the infant during their recovery.”

Heart-wrenching. The department did not mince words. It knows what happened to this baby is a true tragedy.

“The crux of our mission as pro-lifers is calling people out when they have a double standard over the treatment of a newborn versus the treatment of a child in the womb,” Stockbauer asserted. “Geography doesn’t change human rights, and what we’re looking for isn’t control over women’s bodies. This isn’t about subjugating women or oppressing women — that’s not anybody’s goal. Our goal is human rights for all. When you conceive a child, you create a unique human being who has their own rights. It’s no longer just about your body.”
