Christians React as Schools and Summer Camps Push LGBT Agenda in June
The longtime stranglehold “Pride Month” has exerted over American society seems to be weakening, but parents must still be wary. After two years of devastating boycotts and with President Donald Trump and his anti-woke administration at the helm of the White House, the corporate push to splatter everything in rainbow colors every June has noticeably waned.
A significant share of corporations have scaled back or completely axed their Pride Month promotions and products this year, and polling shows that Republican support for the LGBT agenda has crashed to a decade-long low. Nevertheless, the LGBT agenda is still seeking new rainbow recruits and, while Americans sit back with a cold drink and cast out a line this summer without rainbow flags in their faces, LGBT activists are doing their own fishing in schools and summer camps.
In Oregon, a middle school hosted a “Pride Spirit Week” for children to kick off June, according to a report from Fox News. The schedule included a Rainbow-Out Day,” when students wore “as many colors as they could;” a black-clad day of “remembrance of lost members of the LGBTQIA+ community;” a “Drag Day,” featuring “drag queen/king/monarch” costumes; a “Queer Hero Day,” when students were encouraged to dress as famous historical figures or pop icons who identified as LGBT; and a “Pride Flag Day,” when students were told they could “dress up as the pride flag of your choice.” The “Pride Spirit Week” also featured classroom lessons on “the history of the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement.”
Parents of students were not notified of the “Pride Spirit Week” event or activities until 15 minutes after school let out on Monday — a potential violation of Oregon state law, which stipulates that school districts must inform “parents or guardians in advance of any instruction on human sexuality … and give the parents or guardians an opportunity to review materials.”
Karissa Sears, executive director of the Oregon Family Council, told The Washington Stand that the school’s failure to notify parents “was not an accident or an afterthought. Instead, we are seeing an effort by the school district to wait until the last minute to notify parents, making it difficult for parents to make an informed decision and opt out their children from the sexualized ideology being promoted.”
She continued, “In cases like this, parents should be informed at least several weeks prior. Oregon law is clear. Advanced notice is required when it comes to sexual instruction in schools. Parents have a right to know what the school is presenting so that they can opt their children out.” Sears added that the school district “cares more about their own agenda than Oregon law when it comes to parental rights. It is a clear violation of Oregon law and they should be held accountable.”
In another deep blue state, a nominally Christian organization is hosting a Pride Month summer camp for children. The Stephens Family YMCA in Champaign, Illinois will put on “Camp Kaleidoscope” in late June and mid-July. “Camp Kaleidoscope is intended for LGBTQ+ youth or youth who are part of LGBTQ+ families,” reads a description of the camp in a YMCA brochure. The camp, intended for 2nd through 9th graders, is being run “in collaboration with” Uniting Pride of Champaign County, an LGBT activist organization known for distributing gender transition gear such as “chest binders.”
Camp Kaleidoscope “provides children with daily summer adventures that promote a healthy spirit, mind and body in a safe space where campers can meet new friends, learn team building, and experience character growth and development,” according to the brochure. The brochure added, “The goal of our camp is to experience joy in recreation, while creating a safe environment for youth who are part of the LGBTQ+ community to be authentically themselves.” Uniting Pride will also host a “Queer Swim Night” for “families” at the Stephens Family YMCA.
Dr. Alex McFarland, director for worldview at Charis Bible College, commented to TWS, “The Constitution should not be used to enforce manufactured, contrived rights demanded by the loudest activists.” He continued, “It is doubly sad that a historically Christian organization, like the YMCA, would be holding Pride events — no doubt having caved to the pressure of the LGBTQ transgender lobbyists.” McFarland added, “Parents, leaders, and certainly organizations built with Christian finances have a responsibility to stand for morality and truth, not placate ideological bullies.”
The Washington Stand reported earlier this week that the YMCA previously had webpages detailing policies allowing transgender-identifying biological men to use women’s restrooms, locker rooms, and showers but removed the websites after facing backlash from the American Parents Coalition. Although many corporations have backed away from Pride Month, there are some — Abercrombie and Fitch, Lululemon, Macy’s, AT&T, Deloitte, among others — collaborating with the Trevor Project, an LGBT organization that hosts sexually explicit conversations with teens and hides their gender transitions from parents.
American Family Association Executive Vice President Ed Vitagliano told TWS, “Parents are the first line of defense against destructive ideologies that are creeping into the hearts and minds of their children. Now, more than ever, parents must take that role seriously.” He added, “LGBTQ activists are promoting the Sexual Revolution and the perversion of God’s design for human sexuality, marriage, and family. If parents won’t protect their children, very few others will.”
“It’s truly horrific,” Focus on the Family issues analyst Jeff Johnston told TWS, describing the child-geared Pride Month events. “The YMCA and this middle school are abusing children — causing sexual confusion, inculcating them into a false, harmful ‘gender’ ideology, and creating identity confusion in young children and adolescents.”
Noting that Focus on the Family produces numerous resources to help parents protect and educate their children from harmful ideologies, he continued, “We encourage parents to protect their children as much as possible, but kids must also be grounded in biblical truths about marriage, relationships and sexuality — in age appropriate ways. These truths include: Humans are made in God’s image — male and female; marriage joins together a husband and wife; and sexual expression is designed for marriage.”
