Trump 2.0 and the 119th Congress: A Solid Start, But Much Work Left to Do
This week, CBS News released polling that revealed Americans’ views on President Donald Trump’s job performance so far. He received his highest approval rating ever, with 53% of respondents approving of his work to this point. Interestingly, 70% of participants — regardless of whether they support Trump — agree that the president is doing what he promised to do.
During President Trump’s first term, the White House tracked the commitments to the American people on a whiteboard situated near the Oval Office, checking them off one by one as they fulfilled them. This term, FRC Action is tracking his commitments related to life, family, religious freedom, and many other issues, checking them off if and when they are fulfilled. So far, there are a lot of checks on that virtual whiteboard. You can check out our Trump Commitment Tracker here!
One great example comes from our annual Pray Vote Stand Summit in 2023 when candidate Trump promise to review the sentences of pro-life activists wrongly prosecuted under the FACE Act. On his third day in his second term, he fulfilled this commitment by pardoning those peaceful pro-life activists. Another noteworthy commitment Trump made on the campaign trail was to prevent the federal government from promoting or carrying out gender transitions at any age — this one he fulfilled on day one.
It’s been a whirlwind of action from this new administration, toppling policies that harm American families, sovereignty, prosperity, and safety, and putting in place new policies to restore America to greatness. Several other actions directly relate to FRC Action’s core issues of faith, family, and freedom.
- Faith: Trump signed an executive order forming a task force to combat anti-Christian bias in the federal government.
- Family: U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the agency would “prioritize projects and goals” that “direct funding to local opportunity zones” and that “mitigate the unique impacts of DOT programs, policies, and activities on families and family-specific difficulties, such as the accessibility of transportation to families with young children, and give preference to communities with marriage and birth rates higher than the national average.”
- Freedom: The president signed an executive order withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization — protecting America from the WHO’s proposed pandemic agreement that would endanger American sovereignty.
These are just a few examples of the actions taken by the current administration that impact our issues. But there is still much work to be done. As good and necessary as these executive actions are, a future administration could reverse these policies. This is why the work of Congress is so important! I served in the U.S. House of Representatives for eight years, so I know how tough it can be to get a majority of 435 representatives to agree. Especially when Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is working with a razor-thin majority in the House, and the GOP-controlled Senate needs Democratic votes to overcome the legislative filibuster. It’s no doubt a heavy lift, but that’s what we’re here for at Family Research Council Action.
The FRC Action team and I actively work to influence members of Congress to pass good legislation. Our grassroots network plays a vital role in this effort by sending messages to their members of Congress and signing petitions that we deliver and share widely. We couldn’t do it without the hundreds of thousands of grassroots supporters who step up to contact their members when key legislation needs their voice.
Recently, we’ve seen some encouraging progress for life, family, and religious freedom. However, the fight is far from finished, and we understand that complacency can be deadly. We are just in the first inning of the second Trump term, and the 119th Congress. There are many godly men and women in both the administration and in Congress who seek the Lord and desire to do His will. It’s our desire to build off the momentum of these first weeks of the new government and see this country truly transformed for the glory of Christ.
