Hawley Calls for Federal Fraud Investigators to Probe Planned Parenthood
With health care fraud schemes at the center of national attention, a pro-life congressman is urging federal authorities to investigate the nation’s largest abortion profiteer for fraud. In a letter dated June 11, Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) asked Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has teamed up with Vice President J.D. Vance and the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, to launch an investigation into Planned Parenthood for allegedly administering gender transition drugs to minors and receiving Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements for doing so.
“I appreciate your focus on combatting fraud in our nation’s healthcare programs and ensuring that taxpayer dollars are being used for their lawful, intended purposes,” Hawley wrote, asking Oz to probe Planned Parenthood’s “role in pushing transgender madness onto minor children.”
According to a Government Accountability Office report Hawley cited, Planned Parenthood and its affiliates have received more than $1.5 billion in Medicare and Medicaid payments from 2019 to 2021. “In other words, billions of taxpayer dollars have been taken from those in poverty and the elderly and given to Planned Parenthood,” the senator noted. “Moreover, these funds apparently have been used to prop up Planned Parenthood’s provision of transgender procedures to children,” he added.
In addition to committing abortions, Planned Parenthood also provides children with gender transition drugs, including hormone drugs and puberty blockers, and even skirts state and federal laws to avoid mandatory parental consent or notification. According to Hawley’s letter, the abortion giant even prescribes gender transition drugs to children during children’s first appointments, without “any medical documentation whatsoever.” Planned Parenthood’s gender transition drug-provision has increased by 40% year-over-year, Hawley said. “This is unconscionable.”
“I am concerned that critical healthcare dollars are flowing to an organization that promotes transgender treatments on minors,” the senator wrote. He lamented that Congress has failed to renew a federal ban on Medicaid reimbursements going to Planned Parenthood, effectively providing the abortion giant with fungible taxpayer dollars despite federal provisions barring taxpayer dollars from funding abortions or gender transition procedures for minors.
“In the absence of congressional action, you have an opportunity to expand your fraud investigation by probing Planned Parenthood’s compliance with applicable laws and regulations,” Hawley wrote, suggesting that Planned Parenthood may be violating federal regulations to obtain Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. “The organization’s transgender activities appear at the least to subvert Congress’s intent to direct Medicaid and Medicare funds to basic healthcare needs.”
In recent weeks, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced two significant settlements with major children’s hospitals that conducted gender transition procedures on minors but fraudulently obtained Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements for those procedures, in violation of federal regulations. Both the Cleveland Clinic and the Texas Children’s Hospital admitted to fraudulently billing Medicare and Medicaid for medical procedures that were never performed, instead conducting gender transition procedures on children, which President Donald Trump ordered last year, could no longer be eligible for Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement, further threatening to deny any federal funding reimbursements to institutions conducting the procedures on minors.
Oz has played a role in Vance’s investigations into widespread fraud, focusing on Medicare and Medicaid fraud, over the past several months. Last month, Oz confirmed that nearly 1,000 Los Angeles-area hospice centers have been suspended under suspicion of fraud, further announcing a “moratorium” on the licensing and approval of new hospice centers and “home health care” centers until the fraud is addressed and new safeguards are put in place. The 800 hospice centers Oz and Vance shut down accounted for at least $1.4 billion in Medicaid fraud in 2025 alone.
Hawley concluded his letter, “I therefore urge you to act to ensure Planned Parenthood cannot defraud our nation’s healthcare programs. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.”
Joy Stockbauer, a policy analyst at Family Research Council, commended Hawley for his tireless efforts to combat Planned Parenthood’s fraudulent attacks against human dignity.
“I applaud Senator Hawley for leading boldly to hold Planned Parenthood accountable for its disregard for human life and dignity,” she told The Washington Stand. “Planned Parenthood makes a fortune off of harming children — killing the unborn in abortions and pushing deeply problematic cross-sex hormones at the ones they don’t manage to kill in the womb. The latest reports indicate that Planned Parenthood President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson receives an annual salary of nearly a million dollars. This organization should never receive another cent of taxpayer funding — they never should have in the first place.”
