House Republicans are advocating for protecting children from being exposed to transgender content in TV shows. 

On July 13, 47 House members wrote a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) imploring a “review of the TV Parental Guidelines to ensure that children are not being indoctrinated with radical gender ideology behind their parents’ backs.” Some of the GOP members who signed on included Andy Ogles (Tenn.), Lauren Boebert (Colo.), and Randy Fine (Fla.). 

“American children and families are under attack. Parents deserve full transparency from television and streaming services regarding unwanted sexual content in programming rated for children, and it is our intention to provide them with the tools and information they need to make informed choices for their families,” stated the letter. “Unfortunately for America’s children, Democrats disagree.”

This comes after a Public Notice issued by the FCC in April stated that “parents have raised concerns that controversial gender identity issues are being included or promoted in children’s programs without providing any disclosure or transparency to parents,” specifically referring to shows with transgender and “non-binary” programming.

“We believe that families should not be blindsided by ideological content hidden inside entertainment marketed to minors,” the House members penned in their letter.

An analysis by Concerned Women for America found that “Netflix programming rated appropriate for children revealed that 41% of G-rated series and 41% of TV-Y7-rated series contain LGBTQ+ content.”

“Parents are highly concerned about content indoctrinating their children, and our recent polling shows a majority of parents say it is crucial for TV programs to disclose sensitive themes in children’s TV programming. We are grateful to those 47 House Republican members who have stood up for children and families,” said Penny Nance, CEO and president of Concerned Women for America.

CWA discovered in a poll that 87% of Americans think it is “very important or somewhat important” that children’s content includes labels indicating themes such as gender and sexual orientation.

“We believe the FCC needs to ensure that the TV content ratings system is transparent and accurate so parents can make informed viewing decisions for their children. Right now, the TV ratings system does not alert parents to LGBTQ+ themes in their children’s TV shows. Parents should have that information, and it’s time to give them that choice,” Nance said.

The April FCC note added that per the Telecommunications Act of 1996, “parents should be provided with timely information about the nature of upcoming video programming and have the ability to block violent, sexual, or other programming that parents believe is harmful to their children. Congress specifically excluded ratings based on political or religious content.”

In recent years, progressive and “woke” themes have become increasingly ever-present in TV shows made for children. 

One such show, “The Owl House,” is a cartoon that aired from 2020-2023 on the Disney Channel. The media recommendations site Screenwise described the show as “...(suitable for ages 7+), following a teen girl who stumbles into a magical world full of witches, demons, and surprisingly deep feelings. It features LGBTQ+ representation, moderate fantasy violence, and some genuinely intense/scary moments…”.

According to a press release, CWA filed a comment with the FCC “about why TV programs should alert parents to LGBTQ+ and other sensitive content in shows, especially those targeted to children.”
