As a New School Year Begins, You Can Help Provide Bibles to Students
As families across the country look forward to another fun and productive school year, many are praying that more and more children will be introduced to God, His Word, and His sacrificial love for them.
One organization is working very hard to share God’s word with children in public schools throughout the United States. Bibles in Schools exists to donate copies of Scripture to public school libraries and other public educational facilities. Students love the Action Bibles because they resemble graphic novels, and librarians have even asked Bibles in Schools for more copies because they are in such high demand. Since its founding in 2019, the organization has donated over 15,000 engaging Bibles to over 3,600 public school libraries across the country — in addition to donating more than 7,500 Bibles to juvenile detention centers and even hospitals.
Founder and Executive Director of Bibles in Schools Hannah Salisbury explains how God moved her to start her organization. In 2018, she began walking around her school and praying for her coworkers, students, and families. A few months later, she was teaching a reading group, and she realized that one of her second-grade students was reading an old Bible. The eight-year-old boy opened to the front page and started reading the definitions of the words. He told her, “I want to learn more about God, heaven, and hell.” She asked him, “Where did you get that Bible from?” The student said, “I got it from our library.”
Jesus opened her eyes that day and put it on her heart to get engaging Bibles in the elementary school libraries in her county — Bibles they would be excited to check out of the library. After rallying a team of friends, family, and people from her church, they donated “The Action Storybook Bible” to all 38 public elementary school libraries in their county. This started a movement that’s spread to schools all across the United States!
There are five Action Bibles for various ages and grades: “The Action Bible,” “The Action Storybook Bible,” “The Action Bible: Heroes & Villains,” “The NIV Action Study Bible,” “The Action Study Bible (Spanish Edition).” In addition, there is a rhyming book for elementary children, “Wherever You Go, I Want You to Know.”
For those who are hesitant to support Bibles in Schools, questioning whether it’s constitutional, Alliance Defending Freedom says, “…The Establishment Clause (what some people call ‘the separation of church and state’) does not bar Bibles from public school libraries. In fact, excluding a Bible because of its religious content could be impermissible hostility toward religion. While students should never be compelled to participate in religious activities, the Supreme Court has explained that ‘the Bible may constitutionally be used in an appropriate study of history, civilization, ethics, comparative religion, or the like.’ And nothing prohibits a school from enabling students to freely engage in research and learning, including about the Bible.”
Bibles in Schools is looking for more people to support their efforts! You can join their prayer team, donate to help bring Action Bibles to schools, and bring awareness to their ministry by telling public school librarians and classroom teachers about their work.
