Is Protecting Children from Transgenderism the Same as ‘Suppressing’ Someone for Being Left-Handed?

January 9, 2025

Neither comedian Bill Maher nor actor Jon Cryer are figures I’m too familiar with. However, during a recent interview, the two men discussed a topic people around the world are almost too familiar with. That is, the issue of transgenderism.

It’s hard not to wonder if Cryer felt as though he had some kind of “mic-drop” moment when he compared transing children to people who are allegedly “suppressed” for being left-handed. If it sounds ridiculous, even without the full context, it’s because it is. Here’s exactly what Cryer said:

“There’s a societal suppression [of transgenderism]. But it’s like left-handedism. Being left-handed was suppressed for thousands of years amongst human beings. Apparently in the ’30s, [once] scientists basically said, ‘Left-handedness doesn’t actually do anything bad,’ left-handedness shot up [because] people just stopped training themselves to be right-handed. This has happened societally before, and that’s the closest analog that I can think of.”

If we break it down and try to spend one minute in leftist shoes, then we could acknowledge that Cryer’s argument, in effect, is as follows: “Just as some people are naturally left-handed, others are naturally transgender, and no one should be forced to go against their nature.” But upon further examination, this analogy falls flat on its face.

For Cryer’s point to hold even an ounce of merit, it would have to be possible for someone to be “born in the wrong body,” as the Left loves to say. But it’s not possible. The fact of the matter is that being left-handed is related to genetics, as it deals with the way one’s brain signals the body to move. It doesn’t require surgery or drugs to be left-hand dominant. Whereas to be “transgender” requires an attempt at completely reconstructing the body — an aim that defies biological reality, goes against all that is natural, and steadily produces victims who suffer from chronic infections, painful scars, permanent infertility, and more.

To compare writing with your non-dominant hand to chopping off healthy body parts and injecting harmful, experimental drugs into the bodies of confused people is nothing short of ludicrous. Now, if Cryer were to compare left-handed people cutting off their right arm to therefore identify as left-handed to transgenderism, then there would be something to follow. But, of course, that would hurt his worldview, wouldn’t it? To properly articulate the analogy along those lines would force Cryer to admit that trying to change one’s gender means jumping through hoops of irrationality.

Take, for example, a moment from The Daily Wire’s 2022 documentary, “What Is a Woman?” In the film, Matt Walsh sat down with Marci Bowers, a supposed doctor that specializes in “gender-affirming” surgeries. He’s also a man who thinks he’s a woman. But when Walsh brought up the concept of “apotemnophilia,” the idea that a healthy person identifies as disabled and therefore desires unnecessary, elective amputations, do you know what Bowers said? He said, “I don’t even pretend to know what apotemnophilia is all about. [But] I would say that’s — pardon my non-medical language — kooky.”

There you have it. Even the infamous Dr. Bowers thinks it’s “kooky” to cut off a healthy body part simply to appease the itch to identify as disabled. Well, it may be more accurate to say he kind of holds that position. Bowers won’t acknowledge how that “kooky” practice is analogous to the entirety of transgender ideology. And this alleged doctor won’t even bat an eye when confessing that he’s performed surgeries on minors as young as 16. At any age, this ideology is wrong. But especially considering how much it’s targeted at children, it’s far beyond “kooky” for anyone to keep pretending that bodily mutilation is some form of love or acceptance when it’s nothing short of evil.

Genesis 1:27 reads, “So God created man in His own image … male and female He created them.” The understanding that there are two sexes, and that they cannot be changed, was a well-known, rational, and accepted fact for most of all the time the earth has existed. Only recently has that narrative been significantly challenged in the way we’re seeing it challenged now. And yet, at its foundation is a rebellion against God and creation order — a rebellion that has been around since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden.

At the heart of transgenderism there is a denial of God’s sovereignty over creation. At the center of this horrendous ideology is this belief that objective reality, established by the Creator of the universe, can be waved away by the hand of the created. Transgenderism is void of truth. In fact, transgenderism must ignore the truth. It’s no wonder Cryer said his poor analogy was the best he could think of, because no good analogy in support of transgenderism exists. Romans 1:22 states, “Claiming to be wise, they became fools.” It appears Cryer is a good example of this verse in action. But it’s not just Cryer. It’s anyone who attempts to defend this ideology that destroys bodies, relationships, and lives.

Yes, some people are naturally left-handed. But as The Washington Stand’s senior writer Joshua Arnold put it, “Cryer gets the analogy exactly backward.” Because “whether a person is right-handed or left-handed is determined by that person’s DNA. Whether a person is male or female is determined by that person’s DNA. Societal suppression of left-handedness is equivalent to societal suppression of biological sex by affirming people in a transgender lifestyle.”

Ultimately, he added, “the analogy [will always break] down because people generally have the ability to use and train both their hands, but people don’t have the ability to be both male and female.” Transgenderism is not, and never was, natural. The only sliver of “natural” it has is that it’s a natural part of a broken and fallen world. Unlike which hand you write with, Arnold pointed out, “maleness or femaleness gets much closer to our identity, function, and role as human beings made in the image of God. No amount of retraining, hormones, or even surgery can turn a man into a woman or a woman into a man.” The idea that “I can be whatever gender I want to be” is the product of a heart and mind corrupted by sin. And the industry that pushes this destructive ideology on innocent children is nothing short of wicked.

Listen to the stories of those who have been through this process of trying to change their gender only to discover that it cannot be done. Whether religious or not, these stories have common themes, such as the fact that they were lied to by so-called professionals and manipulated by people they trusted. They’re told their problems will go away as doctors shove them down a path that, unbeknownst to the patient, is the start of some of the most damaging and problematic choices they could ever make.

It’s easy to brush off someone like Jon Cryer. After all, there’s likely many people reading this who either don’t know who he is or at least give him very little attention. But he, like many, is a part of this movement that is hurting men, women, and children. No more sweeping it under the rug. It’s well past time to say “enough is enough.”

Cryer doesn’t get to just compare transing children to people who are left-handed as we sit back and laugh it off. His comments, like this whole ideology, must be called out for what it is: rebellion against God and creation order; an attack against the good, the true, and the beautiful; a knife to a body that was never meant to be harmed; a suffocating chain around the neck of innocent people.
