Back to School in an AI Minefield
Lily Brown turned to artificial intelligence because her college philosophy readings seemed written in another language. ChatGPT helped the psychology major understand difficult texts and organize essays. Yet every useful answer produced a harder question: Was AI helping her learn, or quietly beginning to do the learning for her?
Brown’s syllabi warned students not to use AI to write essays or form their thoughts. That sounds clear until a student confronts the gray areas: whether a summary counts as cheating, whether an outline does, or whether an essay written in her own words but polished by AI crosses a line. Brown wondered whether “helping me form outlines” crossed the line.
Millions of students returning to school face the same ethical minefield. Many colleges warn students not to become dependent on AI, while employers signal that applicants who cannot use it may soon be left behind.
The tension erupted publicly during the 2026 commencement season. At the University of Arizona, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt told about 10,000 graduates that AI would touch “every profession, every classroom, every hospital, every laboratory.” The booing began as he spoke. Schmidt acknowledged what he was hearing: This generation fears that machines are coming and jobs are evaporating.
The boos were more than poor commencement manners. They exposed the consternation spreading across campuses. Students are warned that AI may threaten their work, wages, creativity, and career plans — and then urged to celebrate it as inevitable progress. They are not necessarily rejecting the future. They fear a future being imposed before colleges, employers, and public policy have established understandable rules.
Meanwhile, students are already using AI extensively. A 2026 Lumina Foundation-Gallup study found that 57% of college students use it for coursework at least weekly, including about one in five who use it daily. Students turn to AI to understand difficult material, check answers, edit writing, summarize notes, and generate ideas. Yet 42% say their schools discourage AI use, and another 11% report that it is prohibited.
That contradiction creates an almost impossible message: Do not use AI so much that you compromise your education, but do not neglect it so completely that you compromise your employability.
Faith Maeba understands the second danger. The 21-year-old psychology major at Virginia Commonwealth University had no coding background and initially resisted her mother’s suggestion that she study artificial intelligence. Then she began examining graduate programs dealing with human behavior in a workplace being reshaped by machine learning. She added an AI minor because, as she put it, it was “giving me an edge.”
Her story also introduces the parental dilemma. Faith’s mother saw what the labor market was signaling and urged her daughter to prepare for it.

Their dilemma is not theoretical. A survey of business students at American University’s Kogod School found that regular AI use rose from 6.2% to 29% in three years. More telling, the share reporting AI-related questions during job interviews jumped from 11.6% to 42.6%. Students now regard AI competence as an employment requirement, even as they seek clearer guidance about using it responsibly.
Nor does use mean enthusiasm. An Inside Higher Ed survey found that 40% of students worried about AI dependence, while 55% expected it to affect their career prospects negatively. Only one in 10 thought their institution was handling AI’s rise very well. What appears to be acceptance may be resignation: AI will be part of my future, so I had better learn to live with it.
Colleges cannot solve this problem with blanket bans. A school that merely prohibits AI may leave graduates professionally unprepared. But a school that permits AI to perform the student’s intellectual labor may send them into the world uneducated.
Institutions should establish clear, course-specific rules stating what is permitted, what must be disclosed, and what constitutes misconduct. They should require students to demonstrate personal mastery through in-class writing, oral defenses, and problem-solving without machine assistance. They must also teach students to detect AI’s fabricated citations, hidden assumptions, biases, and confidently stated falsehoods.
Some academic work should remain AI-free. Reading a difficult book, struggling with a problem, revising an inadequate draft, and defending a conclusion are not obsolete inefficiencies. That friction is often where learning takes place.
Parents also have a stake. Families save, borrow, postpone other needs, and sacrifice to send children to college. Students and parents borrowed $102.6 billion for postsecondary education in 2024-25. They are not paying merely for a credential — or for assignments that a machine can complete in seconds. They reasonably expect graduates who can think, write, communicate, exercise judgment, and earn a living.
Before paying a tuition deposit, parents should ask whether the college has a coherent AI policy, how it verifies that students understand their work, and whether its curriculum prepares graduates to use AI without becoming dependent upon it. They should also ask their children to explain what uses are permitted in each course and to disclose when AI materially contributes to an assignment. Parents are not merely purchasing a credential. They are investing in the formation of a capable, honest, and employable adult.
For Christians, the issue reaches beyond tuition and employment. Scripture distinguishes knowledge from wisdom. Proverbs 2:6 declares, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” AI can collect information, imitate argument, and produce polished language. But it does not bear God’s image, love truth, develop character, or accept moral responsibility for the conclusions it produces.
Students remain accountable for the work submitted under their names. A Christian view of education teaches students neither to fear the machine nor bow before it, but to govern its use according to truth, wisdom, self-control, and moral responsibility.
Today’s students must not be forced to choose between preserving the integrity of their education and preparing for the reality of employment. They need parents and educators who will guide them through the minefield — who will teach them when to use AI, when to question it, and when to turn it off.
The purpose of education must remain larger than producing workers who can operate intelligent machines. It must produce men and women with the wisdom, character, and courage to govern them.
